January 3rd, 2008 - Resolutions

I have one New Year's resolution for 2008. To eat a bowl of pho - Vietnamese noodle soup - made in a different kitchen by different hands every week throughout the course of the year.

I'm fortunate to live in a city with a thriving pho culture, even more fortunate to have had the experience of visiting Vietnam twice this year. More on the why of this and other stories later.

Of course, as with all NY's resolutions, I am already in danger of failing. Week 1 should perhaps read Weak One. So here is a preliminary taste - a bowl of the homemade pho of a dear friend in Hanoi. A subtle and understated broth that reflects both his personality and the culture of the city that has been his family's home for at least three generations.
